View Full Version : I just had an interesting idea for a trigger system...

So I made this post on TFR regarding the feel of a 6-shot S&W revolver vs. a 7-shot on the L-frame, and I was thinking about how to actually fix the problem with the 7-shot.

The reason that a 6-shot trigger is better than a 7-shot trigger has to do with the way things are placed in the gun. On an L-frame S&W, the cylinder (ideally) begins rotating very shortly after you press the trigger in double-action mode, and stops rotating and locks up very shortly before the double-action sear releases the hammer. This makes the trigger stroke very smooth, and ideal for rapid fire.

On a 7-shot, the cylinder rotates less, but the trigger travels the same distance. The hand rotates the cylinder into lockup long before the hammer has moved fully to the rear, and changes the trigger pull weight dramatically. Instead of a smooth "Pressssssssssssssss-BANG" you get a "Pressssssss-click-presss-BANG", to put it in simpler terms. Guess how detrimental that is to fast AND accurate shooting.

On the N-frame (8-shot) .357s, everything is placed and sized better to allow for cylinder lockup right before the hammer falls.

What if the hand were shortened to a point, where the movement of the trigger without the cylinder happens FIRST? The trigger is pulled a short distance, under the weight of the mainspring and rebound spring. Then, the hand hits the cylinder, adds weight to the trigger pull, but it's a much longer and smooth pull, giving time to steady the gun during the final stroke. It's not quite as good as the 6-shot version, but I think it might be different enough to allow fast and accurate double-action shots. Or am I just dum?

Seems to me all you'd do is move the "dead spot" in the trigger from the middle to the beginning of the pull. You'd have to change the geometry (meaning the position of the hand on the trigger) to really make a difference IMO.
