I've been itching for a bolt action rifle for some time now, after my H&R .22 bit the dust. I was pretty set to just a Savage MkII but after doing a little reading about .17HMR and .17HM2 I decided that the longer reach, faster velocities, abundant match grade ammo, and the ability to turn small animals inside out was something that appealed to me. I've been looking at getting into hunting, probably starting with squirrels and rabbits, and while .22 works well for those I wanted something with a little more punch than that and less likely to go through a rabbit and into the next town than my AR-15 in .223.

I settled on this box and its contents:

Always a sign of good things:

Apparently I can't hold a camera still to save my life and I was too lazy to get the tripod. ReeeeeeeeeeeeeealTreeeeeeeeee Ahoy!

It's a Savage 93R17 in a camo stock.

Despite any kind of advantages in concealment, this stock is ugly as sin, lets do something about that:

First step: Disassemble

Second step: Krylon Fusion in 'River Rock'

After applying the paint to the first side, I devised an intricate drying apparatus.

The 15 minute wait for the paint to dry is the perfect time to take advantage of the best part about Chinese take-out: it's better the next day/

Here's the stock after both sides got a coat:

Reassembled with scope and bipod:

My first impressions are that Savages are really nice for the price. The Accu-Trigger is pretty sweet, I've got it set right now so that after the initial takeup of the Glock style trigger thingy all it takes is a gentle pressure to break. Hopefully it will warm up a little tomorrow and the winds will die down so I can take it out to the range and put it through its paces.
