Meet my future project gun.
I got this baby cheap from someone who needed some quick cash.

Springfield Armory milspec 1911.
It'll end up really wishing it was a commander style, as I'm going to basically make it one over the next year.
First order of business is getting a tactical safety. The standard thumb safety sucks. Then I'll probably end up getting a beavertail grip safety as well as a skeleton "commander style" hammer for it.
A neat thing is that the GI style sights on this are installed into novak-style grooves, so I can change those out, too.
Fang will murder me for this, but Franken1911 has been born.
What do you folks recommend for self defense ammo in .45? This is my first gun in .45ACP.

While I'm no certifiable expert, I imagine sticking to Winchester SXTs couldn't be a wrong choice for defensive ammo, probably in 230 grain. Overall, nice looking gun, nice indeed.

What ammo is the ammo that you have pictured? I also would go with the Winchesters, I currently have Rangers but do carry WWB 230 JHPs on occasion.

I would have to agree with ZMT - you really can't go wrong with the SXTs.

I ended up getting a sweet as hell deal on some Federal Premium HST's. (LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY BIZZNATCHES)
The SXT's were twice as much, so I jewed out.
I love this gun
I bought a Galco Concealable for it, which I hope to get next week.
Hitting the gunshow on Saturday to get parts to turn this gun even cooler.
I got a shoulder holster along with this gun. And now, I realise I have no godamn idea on how to fit one.
Any of you folks know how?

I keep Federal Hydrashok 165gr .45 in my Sig. Reduce Recoil is a bit more comforting when i'm still half asleep and things go bump in the night.
It was $15 for 20rds. Texas prices will be lower, I'm sure.
Nice Gun.

BTW, Fang, your instructions on how to disassemble a 1911 are awesome and spot on. Thanks.

Speaking of, I'd love to see a write up on bushing-less 1911s. I can't figure out how to field strip a compact 1911 and haven't found it on the internet yet.

230gr Ranger Talon (RA45T) is the only way to go.
You should have just bought a Loaded model, faggot.

From what I can tell, every bull-barrel 1911 I've seen uses a one-piece full-length guide rod. These guide rods have a hole through the center which is used to insert a takedown tool, which is basically a bar that keeps the slide from moving forward.
You pull the slide back until the takedown hole is outside the slide, insert the tool, then release the slide. With spring tension removed from the slide itself you can move it forward freely to the slide lock notch, pop the lock and strip normally.
This is how I think it works, based on what I've observed of the parts involved. It's entirely possible that I'm completely wrong.
