For once in my life I agree with Governor Corzine of New Jersey regarding firearms laws. Shocking news I am sure for those that know me and my staunch support of firearms freedoms among responsible adults. But in a conference the other day Governor Corzine nailed it when he said:
"My opponent tells you we don't need additional laws," Corzine told reporters today. "It's very hard to understand how anybody thinks you need to be buying 13 guns in a given year in New Jersey."
Who can disagree with that statement? We really don't need additional laws and not just on firearms. Prohibitions against murder and unjustified killings have been on the books before the books were in book form, they are in the good book, which is the basis for the majority of laws out there. We've got a law already, why add more and more conditions to the law unless the laws on the books are not working in the first place? I would also do away with the notion that we just need more enforcement of the current laws on the books.
Instead of failing by trying to stack another law atop a law atop a law, I suggest the following:
Using a firearm or a tire-iron or any kind of tool in the commission of a crime should get the book thrown at the agent of the crime. I'm pretty sure that that law is on the book already but just a bit muddled with various lengths for time for each elemental weapon. Lets remove those modifications, get rid of the footnotes and the addendums on the laws on the books and consolidate them into a single law that states:
If you use an object that can end the life of another in the commission of a crime, or as a tool of intimidation for the benefit of a crime, you get a hefty prison sentence.
No jail time other than the length of time needed to transfer you to prison. 25 years minimum, with an asset forfeiture to boot. The only failing element of my plan is that we might need to further change the system to ensure that a fair system of checks and balances were in place to allow the accused access to good legal representation,
Another point I agree on is the 13 handguns a year. It is hard to understand why someone needs 1 firearm per month in any state. With the price of ammo, you need to be stock piling ammo and not wasting it on arms. Have you seen the price of ammo recently? Seriously. Stop buying guns, buy gun parts to repair the ones you own and lots of ammo. I mean ammo forts. Start building.
We need some kind of law on the books that punishes and thwarts all attempts at people collecting or purchasing more than 1 of any item that can be used to render life inanimate or that can be used irresponsibly. I'm looking at you recent lottery winners, million dollar athletes, and well-to-do collectors. You guys can forget that car collection, start taking the bus and loving it. Collect pictures of the cars instead.
In fairness we should not just pick on a single segment of society to enact crazy laws upon. That would be nuts right? Any politician doing that would certainly be voted out right? No way, thats just crazy man. Lets spread this around a bit to - bulk purchase survival shoppers, people 'buying' more than 13 items of a single nature at a time...(Dads/husbands -you are going to need to enforce a two squares only rule), antique sword collectors, some construction tools such as hammers, computers, and screw it... all manner of tools. The computers aren't there in jest, because you can type on them and hurt someones feelings pretty badly.
I can hear the anti-13'ers already, “But these items are tools made for specific purposes.” I'll just nod at them like I really care what they are saying. “Just because someone bludgeoned someone else doesn't make it fair for you to make us all suffer or imply that we are all murderers. There are claw hammers, ball pien hammers, club hammers, power hammers, and FULLY AUTOMATIC jack hammers, all have a specific purpose, function and use.
Thats where Gov. Corzine and I get them. Suckers right into the trap.
“No citizen not authorized expressly by the state is mentally able, nor capable, nor do they need to handle a Jack Hammer. Only 'under-the-table workers' need them, these 'under-the-table people' don't pay into the system, they don't have insurance, they don't pay worker's compensation, they don't have mandatory training. In short they are criminals and only people of that same mindset would support it. You are all criminals claiming outdated castle doctrines and rights protections for home ownership or home improvement just because you feel you should be able to hang pictures on a wall or break up a driveway. Criminals.”
Suckers, indeed.
