The last trip to the range brought a couple facts to my attention:
It's really cold in Snoqualmie this time of year.
I suck at shooting with a reflex sight.
The reflex sight in question is attached to this gun in the following manner:

The price of .223 being what it is, I'm considering ways to get some red dot practice on the cheap using my 10/22. This 10/22 already has Tech Sights mounted on the rearmost two tapped holes in the receiver, so I'm thinking about using the forward two holes to mount a rail section--something cheap like this (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Tactical-Profile-Rail-Mount/dp/B002GNYCJ4/ref=reg_hu-wl_item-added), trimmed down to just a few inches at the front of the receiver. Alternately, I could reverse the mount so that it extended over the barrel and try to fabricate some sort of shim between it and the barrel so that it wasn't just hanging there. This would allow putting the dot farther forward.
As for the optic, rather than constantly swapping the Aimpoint back and forth between the Mini-14 and 10/22, it might be worth putting a cheap equivalent on the rimfire rifle; perhaps something like this Aimpoint knock-off (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=318955).
This seems like a fairly simple and backward-compatible modification that will let me practice sight acquisition and stance on the cheap. What are your thoughts?
