I picked up a very very well used Ruger Security Six from the fine folks at Summit Gun Broker (http://www.summitgunbroker.com/) for a little under $200. Mark over at Summit was spectacularly easy to deal with and I'd recommend buying guns from them any day of the week.
Anywho, you came here to see a gun not read a glowing review of Summit Gun Broker, so here's my new (to me) Ruger Security Six
Here's the gun as I received it:

http://ruserio.us/images/1/parkmeee%20%20004.jpg
http://ruserio.us/images/1/parkmeee%20%20002.jpg
And here it is after a little time with some lightweight oil and a bronze brush:
http://ruserio.us/images/1/parkmeee%20%20005.jpg
http://ruserio.us/images/1/parkmeee%20%20006.jpg

http://ruserio.us/images/1/parkmeee%20%20008.jpg
It's clear that Ole Cole (Ole Cole was the name written in sharpie on the butt of the grip so we're going to refer to the previous owner as Ole Cole) decided he didn't want a black gun so he decided to remove all of the bluing using a steel brush and way more time than any one man should dedicate to ruining a gun. I'm assuming the gun was attacked with a wire brush because of the brushing lines that were revealed once the grime and rust were removed.
Obviously nobody told Ole Cole that bluing protects the gun from the elements and that leaving it without any finish could lead to permanent damage. Perhaps Ole Cole had the gun confiscated before he could send it off could remove the bluing from under the grips and send it off to be nickel plated. Whatever was going through Ole Cole's mind doesn't matter now. What does matter is what I plan on doing with the gun.
As it stands, I'm thinking pretty seriously about parkerizing the gun but I'm also entertaining the idea of having the gun sent off to have some electroless nickel (http://southridgearms.net/) plating applied. What do you guys think?

Absolutely stole that thing, Miso! My dad used to Tote a .357 Speed Six back in the 70's... he's talked about that gun for years, said he got rid of it when he found out he was gonna have a boy!
Wish he would have kept it... I sure would have loved to have it!
Yeah, and Parkerizing it would be pretty badass no matter how you look at it.
This custom Ruger Alaskan is stunning....

I got a used Taurus 431 in .44 Special and M 73 in .32 S&W Long, they had hardwood grips. I removed them the same day I got them home to put in black Pachmeyr grips. They do not interfere with my HKS speedloaders and look more "Tactical". Rugers may have too fat a rubber grip panel to speedload,so shave it thinner.Helps cushion recoil too. Black Is Cool. Oh,and please PARKERIZE IT!

How does that 431 shoot? I saw one once in a shop, my desire was deeper than my pockets at the time.
1 more vote to parkerize.

Welp, there was a mixup with my Numrich order and I ended up getting my order doubled. I guess now I get to report back on how awesome their customer support is. :toot:

It's a S&W Model 10, not a Ruger Security Six but it's still awesome. (I should have rubbed the extra oil off for the pic but you get the idea)

My project is currently stalled because I had a slight change in ideas. I'm now looking into having Southridge Arms (southridgearms.net) nickel plate my cylinder because I am touched in the brain. I still plan on parkerizing the frame and barrel though.

Gold plate it. Or Parkerize if I must choose between parkerization and nickel plating.

I guess you missed the part where I'm trying to build up a little material to help with the close cylinder gap as well as give the gun a little more character. The frame is getting parkerized, I'd also like to point out that Dave will be using an electroless nickel plating so it wont look like royal ass or flake off like cheap nickel jobs.

I decided against the nickle plated cylinder because I wanted to get the Security Six back on duty as a hiking gun so I opted to parkerize the whole thing.

Before I parkerized the gun it shot great, I'll have to report back tonight to see if I cocked anything up.

I was getting all of my rounds in the black with a standard NRA pistol target at 25 yards with it.

It's funny you mention the wood. I've been contemplating stripping it and staining it a darker color.

Do it....and with something reddish.

Thats the plan, I have a red oak stain that I wanted to try out. First I need to figure out what the mildest form of finish remover I can use on the grips.
