I have joined the 21st century and swapped my cave man carry handle for a flat top upper. I also purchased some Red Uterus MBUS back up sights and a 1-4x24 tactical scope.
The problem I am running into is that I can't seem to mount the rear back up sights and the scope on the weapon at the same time. I'd like to put one of those high speed/low drag, return to zero, quick detach scope ring bases under the scope but I'm not ready to drop 150 bucks on one yet.
What I could do is move the scope forward a little and mount the front scope ring on the free floating hand guard (UTG, not the best quality but seems firm) or get REALLY tall scope rings that allow me to have clearance under the rear lens of the scope.
I obviously don't need the back up sights to have room to deploy under the scope, just enough room to lay flat. If I need them, I'll just have to unscrew the scope rings individually and remove the scope.
Any suggestions on which would be the better option are appreciated. I am reluctant to trust the UTG free floating quad rail with regards to it being stable enough to maintain the scope's zero but I'm not sure I can find scope rings high enough to allow me to mount the rear MBUS under the scope without paying more for my scope rings than I did for the scope. Feel free to impart any wisdom you have.

You're supposed to mount your MBUS under your red dot and leave it folded down until you need it.

I had a feeling I didn't explain that well.... I realize where it goes, it's just that I couldn't mount it under the scope because there wasn'enough clearance for the rear mbus under the scope lense and not enough room on the flat top to move the scope forward and mount the mbus behind it.

Sounds like you're gonna need a different scope mount to push your optic further forward. There are a ton solutions that will do this but I can't think of a single reasonably priced one.
Also, welcome to team AR.

EDIT: you might need a higher mount, I didnt realize how big the rear bell of your 1-4x was until I looked at your photo again.

I got a AR-P.E.P.R. (AR-Proper Eye Position Ready) Mount and all my clearance problems were solved. It allowed me to move the scope far enough forward that my back up rear sight can fit behind the bell. It's a very high quality mount for the money (80 bucks) and has a lifetime warranty. It also works as advertised and put the scope at a very functional and comfortable level. Paired with the Vector Optics Templar 1-4x24 First Focal Plane CQB Compact Scope, it offers great close to medium range accuracy and even more important (to me) quick target acquisition through out the intended focal spectrum.
I bought the mount yesterday morning and took the gun to the range. It was a pain in the ass to bzo the mbus's because they were so off that I wasn't even on the paper at first. The 94 degree heat with 87 percent humidity throwing sweat in my eye while looking into the sun didn't help me much but eventually I got them where I wanted them and threw the scope on and got it dialed in. I am very impressed with the Vector Optics piece. I talked the guy at the gun show down to 160 for it, most of which I made off trades that I brought in. It feels very well made and the lens are surprisingly clear. They didn't shed the direct sunlight quite as well as some higher end scopes do but they are fully multi coated and perform better than any lens I have looked through remotely close to this price point.
Long story short, I'm happy with the set up.

Sweet, I might take a look at them. I was thinking about a Redfield 3-9 for my comedy AR but a 1-4 would sure be nice for what I'm gonna use the gun for.

The longer one? I haven't had a chance to shove a barrel in it's business yet.

I like the railed one.....
after all that fitting and zeroing, broke it all down in pieces and duracoated the upper and lowwer and the barrel extreme flat gray. I know you think duracoat "feels like butts" but it's gonna be sweet IMO.
