A few people have messaged me on IRC with suggestions or ways to improve 230grain.com. Since many people contribute to a forum's success (not just the administrative/moderation team), let's hear what you like, what you dislike, and what you couldn't care less about

I don't suppose it's necessary yet, but maybe a separate Advocacy forum for activist stuff would be helpful?
e; possibly just as part of the Legal forum?

What exactly is WGMM and how does it differ from AOT?

But light gray text on a black background, like we have here, is easier to read than even black on white, especially for long periods of time.
Let's just say that I spent a lot of time on shitty online text-based RPGs in middle school and early high school and long ago figured out the optimal background/foreground combos for reading lots of texts on a monitor over long periods of time.

As far as a suggestion goes. . .
Maybe some kind of sub-forum for the particular demands and needs of milsurp and general ancient-assed firearms? I know we already have the division by type (pistols, rifles, etc) but a lot of the stuff I would be writing and posting about in write-ups and such applies to both or neither.
How about a thread on cleaning cosmolene? Where does that go? What about a writeup on how to judge the condition of a milsurp? A post about how to clean corrosive ammo residue out of guns? I'm sure you can see my dilemma here.
Also, a sub-forum about ammo might be worthwhile. All the loaders would appreciate it I'm sure, and reviews of all the different stuff out there (different brands of ammo, different types of surplus ammo, etc) would be able to consolidated there.

Well, we do have the How-To (http://230grain.com/forumdisplay.php?f=201) forum, into which these would fit nicely. Maybe we need a milsurp tag so it can be easily filtered.
In terms of the ammo/reloaders forum, I think thats a great idea -- if we get some reloaders involved. To my knowledge, the only person who actively reloads on the forums is sza.

I will defer to the greater nerds as to what text and background color is better for the eyes.

I use light grey on black for my IRC background and it's an A+ combination and would not use any other style. I also like how the quick reply and edit features are implemented.
If anything should be changed, it should be the post counter being accumlative, rather than sequential. Like I have three posts on one page somewhere here, and the posts indicator is 1, 2, and 3, instead of whatever the current count is. It's not a forum breaking bug or anything, it's just weird :)
Edit:
The post indicator thing I just mentioned seems to have been fixed. Never mind me. :downs:

Well, I do know that in another forum that most (all?) of us frequent there's quite a few reloaders, more than a few of whom are pretty chill and should probably be tossed an invite. I'll leave those judgments up to you, however.
That said, if an ammo forum was made I'd review the SHIT out of old milsurp ammo. I've got a bit of experience with that stuff and have been keeping records of how various years/manufacturers preform (both in terms of accuracy and how reliable the stuff we tend to get is - see: Paki .303 vs. Brit .303 and Egyptian 8mm (oh god NO!) vs any other 8mm on the planet) for a few years now.
Plus, there's an awful lot of people here who know way to much about the virtues of, for example, WWB 9mm vs. S&B 9mm. I'm sure a solid base of knowledge would be built up really damned fast.
Let's just put it this way: if you build it, they will post.

Yes and no - the more clutter and more forums we have, the more confusing it'll be for people. Its a fine line between high post count per forum and too many forums.
However, if you can promise some good reviews, I see no problem with an Ammo forum....clinotus/cheesey/kovac, any input?

WGMM was/is the general forum for general firearms chat and the AOT was for any non gun topic. AOT seems to have gotten many more posts and topics that fit it more than general types of threads.
I think the failure of it was the naming, which was too vague, and partly the forums setup, as a lot of the subforums can catch the items that could be general topics. I did try to jumpstart it with the firearms safety thread which is more of a general topic rather than an off-topic topic, but we will see. I'm not exactly married to it, though I do believe we should maintain some kind of a General and/or AOT forum-set.

To my knowledge the forums are not exclusive. :) So invite away.

We added the Ammo forum, which to be honest was a huge oversight...it should have been one of the initial forums, so kudos for bringing that up.

My only problem is that there are a million subforums and I can never keep track of what I have and ahve not read (yeah I know little flags and stuff) but I hate having to have to go to a bunch of different forums instead of just one big forum but then I am kind of lazy so meh.

Awesome. I'll hit that up with a few reviews of different ammos once I get back to NC in a few days and have access to my stockpile and my ammo log book.

On the main page under the SU-16 Front-page article, there is a list of new posts since your last visit. Near each poster's name is a red arrow; click it and it'll take you to the newest post in that thread.

what about a "for sale" forum where sales wouldn't be lost in mishmash traffic and could stay posted until sold.

Holy resurrection.
We had one for a bit, but it saw very little traffic. So we merged it with the General. If a trend develops or it starts clutter we can add it again.

For now just toss what you want sold on Mishmash. If its a significant enough sale we might toss it on twitter and Facebook to help with the thread exposure.

How about a CCW forum?

How about a CCW forum?
The problem with a bunch of sub forums is they fragment the users and content posts. One of the biggest problems with a lot of moderate sized web forums is they have way too many sub forums and moderators for the amount of traffic they receive. Their users end up being exposed to fewer threads that are relevant to their interests simply because they're concealed under a second layer of clicking/reading/interaction.
For now, a concealed carry super post, or a series of concealed carry threads would probably get the job done but if enough users create enough threads and the General forum becomes saturated with posts about CCW or CCW related incidents that would certainly warrant the addition of a personal defense subforum.
