Normally I keep an open mind on remakes. But this one is making me wonder how they will adapt it to the current times... There are no more Soviets. Russia is a joke. China is embracing capitalism more and more. Well, I guess grain prices are high..
Islamic dawn? Alternate history? If it's the latter, that'd be pretty cool.

Doesn't matter, it won't be cool at all.
Half the fun of the original one is all the off the wall tinfoil hat stuff, all of the rampant sexism, all of the hamfisted feminist responses to said sexism, and the way it manages to be both a horrible war movie and a horrible high school sports film at the same time. MGM just doesn't get it - the reason it has such a cult following is because it's campy as hell and unintentionally hilarious as fuck.
There's no way, given today's need for ratings that don't break the PG-13 barrier and he wish to not offend people, that they'd be crude or offensive enough to make it truly campy and hilarious the way the original was. Best case they end up making a so-so war movie that's watchable once but really has nothing to draw you back to it again. Worst case they try to stick some goddamned "message" in it or buy into internet hype and make another Snakes on a Plane.
I'd watch a remake once, just because I'd HAVE to, but the old one would be the one that I go back to every time I want to get a little drunk and have some campy soviet fun. I've seen the original enough that I can talk right along with half the scenes at this point and there's no way its' getting replaced.
Besides, it's not red dawn without Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Grey.
